Dama and I had a good day at the show yesterday. We got a 1st in the Bareback Dollar, 4th in the Ribbon Race, 5th in English Pleasure, and 5th in Pole Bending. Not bad for a mostly blind horse! She was also definitely the judge’s favorite, as she would come over and pet Dama between classes. She said that the only reason Dama didn’t place in Equitation was because she doesn’t canter (she paces instead), but that she really enjoyed getting to see an Icelandic horse in action.
It was a bittersweet day, though. I decided that this would be our last show together, as her blindness is progressing very rapidly, and I’m afraid she will be stone-blind by next spring. At 24 years old, I think she deserves a retirement from shows, though I know we’ll still be tooling around the property and hitting the trails. I just don’t think it is fair to force her into situations where she is uncomfortable, especially when she can’t see.
